Winter Break Plans
This winter break, I have planned to do so many things: work on writing up the research I did this semester, study math for the next semester (I’m taking advanced algebra, so I need to review my basics), study for Putnam and the math GRE (I figure studying for the Putnam should cover the GRE, however), work out and make a sane work out schedule for next semester, figure out how I’m going to get the money to pay for getting my wisedom teeth removed (six!), and entertain my uncle and aunt who are coming to visit. I also want to redesign this site and put up more material, like my bookmarks (which I desperately need to sort), learn several programs/languages, setup a system to auto archive all my emails, and learn how to draw, but those are all secondary goals. Looks like I’ll be pretty busy.

I installed the awesome AuthImage plugin from Gudlyf’s world. I don’t have GD or Freetype, and I didn’t want to take the time to figure out how to install them, so I tried using the phonetic text feature– boy was that a fun example of why I avoid installing plugins unless they’re really necessary! First, I found that the iframe-based code he gave in the setup file doesn’t work, because it cuts everything else on the page behind it off– that was the obvious error. The one that took so long to detect was a more subtle one: the plugin generates a 6 digit random authentication code, and expects that to be entered in by the commenter, but the code that displays the code only displays the first 5 chars! Amazingly, no one has told the author of the code yet. I did find one reference to something like that on his comments page, but it was vague enough that I could understand him overlooking that. Well, that’s what I’m off to do now. Spare someothers the time, hopefully.
